At one time or another, every business, even successful ones, have experienced poor cash flow. Cash flow does not have to be a problem any more. Do not be fooled -- banks are not the only places you can get funding. Other solutions are available and you do not have to borrow. What is Factoring? One solution is called factoring. Factoring is the process of selling accounts receivable to an investor rather than waiting to collect the money from the customer. Oh, the Irony Factoring has an ironic distinction: It is the financial backbone of many of America's most successful businesses. Why is this ironic? Because factoring is not taught in business colleges, is seldom mentioned in business plans and is relatively unknown to the majority of American business people. Yet it is a financial process that frees up billions of dollars every year, enabling thousands of businesses to grow and prosper. Factoring has been around for thousands of years. Factors are investors who pay cash for the right to receive the future payments on your invoices. An unpaid receivable or invoice has value. It is a debt your customer has agreed to pay in the near future. Factoring Principals Although factoring deals exclusively with business-to-business transactions, a large percentage of the retail business uses a factoring principal. MasterCard, Visa, and American Express all use a form of factoring in their retail transactions. Using the purest definition of the word, these large consumer finance companies are really just large factors of consumer paper. Think about it: You make a purchase at Sears and charge it to your MasterCard. The store gets paid almost immediately, even though you do not make payment until you are ready. For this service, the credit card company charges Sears a fee (typical fees range from two to four percent of the sale). The Benefits Factoring can offer many benefits to cash-hungry companies. Rather than wait 30, 60, 90 days or longer for payment on a product or service that has already been delivered, a business can factor (sell) its receivables for cash at a small discount off the amount of the invoice. Payroll, marketing efforts, and working capital are just a few of the business needs that can be met with this instant cash. Factoring provides the means for a manufacturer to replenish inventory and make more products to sell: There is no longer a need to wait for earlier sales to be paid. Factoring is not just a cash management tool for manufacturers: Almost any type of business can benefit from factoring. Generally, a business that extends credit will have 10 to 20 percent of its annual sales tied up in accounts receivable at any given time. Think for a moment about how much money is tied up in 60 days' worth of invoices: You cannot pay the power bill or this week's payroll with a customer's invoice, but you can sell that invoice for the cash to meet those obligations. Factoring is a fast and easy process. The factor buys the invoice at a discount, usually a few percentage points less than the face value of the invoice. The Drawbacks People consider the discount a small cost of doing business. A four-percent discount for a 30-day invoice is common. Compared with the problem of not having cash when you need it to operate, the four-percent discount is negligible. Look at the factor's discount as though your business had offered the customer a discount for paying cash. It works out the same. Companies consider the discount the same way they treat a sales price: It is simply the cost of generating cash flow, much like discounting merchandise is the cost of generating sales. Factoring is a cash flow tool used by a variety of businesses, not just those who are small or struggling. Many companies factor to reduce the overhead of their own accounting department. Others use factoring to generate cash, which can be used to expand marketing efforts and increase production. Why Factoring Appeals to the Start-Up Factoring is especially appealing to young and rapidly growing companies. Since the process shortens their business cycle, these businesses can grow faster. The ability to make more products to sell while waiting for invoices to be paid is largely eliminated. Such businesses usually net much more profit with factoring than without, even when the discount is considered. Factoring vs. Bank Loans So, why not simply go over to the friendly banker for a loan to alleviate cash flow problems? A loan can be difficult if not impossible to receive, especially for a young, high-growth operation, because bankers are not expected to decrease lending restrictions soon. The relationships between businesses and their bankers are not as strong or as dependable as they used to be. The impact of a loan is much different than that of the factoring process on a business. A loan places a debt on your business balance sheet, which costs you interest. By contrast, factoring puts money in the bank without the creation of any obligation. Frequently, the factoring discount will be less than the current loan interest rate. Loans are largely dependent on the borrower's financial soundness, whereas factoring is more interested in the soundness of the client's customers and not the client's business itself. This is a real plus for new businesses without established track records. There are many situations where factoring can help a business meet its cash flow needs. It provides a continuing source of operating capital without incurring debt, which can result in growth opportunities that dramatically increase the bottom line. Virtually any business can benefit from factoring as part of its overall operating philosophy. Every good businessperson must understand the concept and benefits of factoring in order to operate as profitably as possible. mistake in her career. She was stuck and unable to choose a direction. Her fear of looking stupid, of
choosing another career that she wouldnt like, loomed over her. Her negative
thoughts were keeping her from making any move at all. Does this sound familiar? Have you pursued a career, or taken an advanced degree, only to find its not for
you? What is your willingness to try something new? If this rings a bell, then Ive got some comforting thoughts for you. Its by your mistakes that you learn and grow. You need to know what you dont
want to do, too! Making choices is part of being an adult and taking control of your life.
The more choices you make, the more risks you take, the more mistakes you will
make. That goes with the territory. Heres the key: Mistakes are a good thing, if you learn from them. Its giving
up and deciding to do nothing afterwards that is the mistake. When I was starting out in my career, I tried nursing school and dropped out after 6
weeks. I tried to make a living as a commercial artist and found I couldnt compete
with other talented designers. After I got a teaching degree, I discovered that the
city was laying off teachers. The list of professions I tried goes on and on. When all this was happening I wasnt very happy. I kept thinking, when am I going
to find the career thats right for me? And it didnt help that I had relatives who
reminded me of the smooth career trajectory of my smart cousin who became an
attorney. As it turned out, I found several careers that fit for a while. I worked in a corporation
for 12 years, was promoted 5 times and finally knew I didnt want corporate life
anymore. I moved on to the next right position. I never felt married to any profession. I had careers and jobs that suited me at particular times in my life. When I was in
my 30s and 40s, making my mark, earning a big salary, having a 4 -window office
with a view and a title were important. Now, I could care less about those things. Job satisfaction, making my own schedule, doing work that I lovethose are the
factors that drive me now. Which brings me to a critical point: If I hadnt made those career mistakes, I would
still be wondering, you know, maybe I could have been a (fill in the blank). I have no regrets that I tried things that I didnt end up staying with long-term. In
fact, my past mistakes enable me to use my experiences to guide clients. So what can you learn from my story? Wisdom and self-knowledge come with making choices; experiencing the
possibilities that are presented to you everyday. Focus on what you can learn about
yourself, not on the fear of making a mistake. In the end, they wont be mistakes.

Here are a few tips and compelling reasons to begin creating your inventory of client testimonials: Credibility We simply believe another persons touting of a business more than whatever the business may say on its own behalf. Testimonials provide external evidence of your success and abilities. TIP: Get your clients permission to use their full name, title and company name along with their quote. Make a list of your happy clients (okay, they are all happy, so this will be a list of ALL of your clients). Begin with those who you know are chatty and have been forthcoming with praise and positive comments in the past (some folks are just more expressive than others). Contact each client by email or phone or in person, depending on how they like being communicated with and ask if they would be willing to provide a testimonial for you. Make it easy for them to provide the kind of testimonial youd like to have by providing them with prompter questions. Examples: What have been the most notable benefits of using my services? What makes our company unique? How has your business improved as a result of the work we did for you? Make it easy for them, period. Some of your clients will zip off a quick email to you with a great testimonial. Others will take this on as a project and may be slow to get it done. They truly want to do a good job for you and may put more work into it than necessary. Take the pressure off offer to have a quick phone conversation with the client, where you can ask pointed questions and jot down notes from what they say. Then, you can write up a quote and have the client review it. This minimizes their workload and increases your ability to get a great quote from them. A win-win! No matter what, always give your client a chance to review the testimonial before you put it on any of your marketing materials. You want them to feel proud of how their comments are portrayed so they continue to be in your fan club. Going forward, be sure to collect a testimonial from each and every client after you complete an engagement the success will be fresh in their minds, which creates an even better quote. (Plus, you wont have to backtrack later.)

If you provide a service that calls for discretion, or are in a highly competitive industry that requires client confidentiality, you can still make use of testimonials, but may have to use the individuals initials or skip their identity altogether. A real name is better, but not at the cost of exposing clients who want or need to remain anonymous always give them the choice. The first bit of advice is rather obvious: no matter what miraculous product you have seen on TV, you must consult a dental care professional before you start using any products. Your dentist will be able to guide you through the sometimes difficult process of choosing the tooth bleaching method that best suits your needs based on your mouth's health, how much whitening you need and how quickly you want results. Then, he will recommend what tooth whitening tray you should use, and also tell you what product is best for you. A dental health expert will design a customized dental tray that fits your own mouth and tooth size. A professional will also be able to suggest what to do with any artificial dental work you may have (bonding, caps, fillings, bridges, etc.), as bleaching will whiten natural dental pieces only. If necessary, he will be able to replace any non-natural piece with a whiter one, just to ensure all your teeth will be the same color once the whitening treatment has succeeded. Visit your dentist on a regular basis to allow him to closely follow the evolution of the whitening treatment, and also to let him fix any problems that may appear. Remember, your teeth will resist treatment, but your gums may not. Let your dentist assess any possible damage to the soft tissue and give you instructions on how to avoid it. Also, keep in mind that tooth whitening is basically a chemical treatment, so avoid any kind of accidental swallowing of the bleaching product. More important yet, do not whiten your teeth if you are a pregnant or lactating woman, or if you are under 13 years old. By Leanne Hoagland-Smith With the advent of spring, trade shows begin to blossom. Research suggests that tradeshows are where todays businesses invest much of their marketing budgets. According to EXPO Magazine, in 2005 revenue expenditures from booth sales will increase 27%! As these shows and conferences continue to grow in space and numbers, the challenge for businesses becomes how to maximize these shows to secure the greatest return on investment both in dollars and time. Define the Goal - Successful trade show marketing begins by first defining the desired end results to be achieved from attendance at the show. This goal should be written using the S.M.A.R.T. criteria Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistically Set High and Time Driven. Sometimes, several desired results are defined such as: identifying potential competitors; identifying potential customers; determining if this is a trade show where my company should exhibit next year; learn what the competition is saying about our product(s), etc. Through these written goals, then decisions can be made as to the number of people to send and what type of people should the company send e.g. engineers, sales, marketing, etc. Without identifying the initial goals, companies will receive costly unexpected and unanticipated outcomes. Ready, Set, Stop! - Goals are set, but there is still more planning before you walk through the exhibit hall doors. Do you know what you wish to learn from each exhibitor? The goal is maybe to identify the competition, but how you operationalize that goal is different for the companys engineer vs. the companys salesperson. Communication: The Key - Given that tradeshows are the "Mecca" for communication both verbally and non-verbally, the key is to be able to deliver in less than 15 seconds what you or your company does. If your tag line is delivered in an engaging manner, your visitor will ask a second question allowing for a dialogue to begin. Communication extends beyond your tag line. Calendars need to be blocked out to return all those promised telephone calls and send out any promised information. Follow-up communication planning is critical to achieving your goals. Creating a post-event mailing piece such as a thank you note and having them available upon your return will enhance goal achievement. The Engagement The Spot Light Is On - The doors open and all eyes are on you and your booth especially if you secured a high traffic booth. You are the consummate professional with the proper tools (business cards, pen, highlighter, Palm, exhibit hall map), professional appearance and your warm, energetic and engaging smile. Now is the time for all that planning to pay. During breaks, you may wish to use the time to walk the exhibit hall to make necessary, legible notes regarding booths, products, etc. Look to those exhibits that seem to draw attendees to them. In case you see old friends, acknowledge them, but dont linger as this keeps you from achieving your goals. At all times, keep your goal in mind so that you maximize your personal resources of time and energy. Before the event closes, check with registration to secure any available statistics such as a count of the number of attendees as well as information on next years event. What's Next - When the doors close and the tradeshow is over, whats next? The answer is simple FOLLOW-UP! Executing follow-up is probably where many businesses fail to leverage their limited resources and secure a positive return on investment. After the event, you begin to build your nurture marketing for each prospect to create Top of Mind Awareness (TOMA www.toma.com). In todays hectic business world, research suggests that you need to touch your prospect 13 times. Your follow-up efforts from phone calls to mailing literature are the second touch. Each 21 to 30 days, you again need to touch your prospect with a postcard, fax, email, newsletter or article. Your consistency during this process is what wins the race and turns those high cost trade show dollars into real sales and increased profits. When Water Won't Remove Carpet Stains Many commercial carpet stain removers work well. Some, however, are formulated for particular types of stains, so read the lable. Some also work better or worse on particular types of carpet, so pre-test the product in an inconspicuous area. To pre-test a product, apply several drops of the solvent to your carpet, then press a white cotton cloth on the area for about fifteen seconds. Examine the cloth and the carpet. If there is color transfer from the carpet on the cloth, or color changes or other damage to the carpet, try a different stain remover. To clean a spill or carpet stain, apply the cleaning agent to a white cotton cloth. Work it into the spot gently, from the outside towards the center, so you won't spread the spot, and don't rub too hard. Blot up the stain after a few minutes, and re-apply the solvent. If you have a shop-vac, it will work better than blotting. Repeat the process until you no longer get a transfer of the stain to the cloth. If this doesn't remove all of the spot, you can try other carpet stain removers. Once you remove as much of the stain as you can, rinse the area with cold water. Use your shop-vac or blot up the water with a clean cloth. Repeat this until all of the stain remover is out. Use a stack of plain white paper towels with a weight on them to soak up the last of the water. A fan will also help speed up the drying time. Fast drying is important. It prevents any remaining stain that is deep down in the carpet from wicking up to the surface. A Cheap Carpet Stain Remover Dawn dishwashing detergent makes a decent carpet stain remover.
